EXHIBITION GUSTAVE-ADOLPHE MOSSA
29 JANUARY - 15 MAY 2022
MUSEEÉ DES BEAUX ARTS JULES CHERET
The gustave-Adolphe Mossa exhibition. Niciensis Pinxit is a retrospective of the work of the famous and strange Nice artist Gustave-Adolphe Mossa (1883-1971). He is best known for his symbolist work, which offers to the eyes works as precious as they are disturbing, making him the ultimate representative of this major artistic movement. But the many other areas in which he invested himself with just as much passion remained largely ignored to this day.
As a worthy continuation of the work of his father, the artist and curator Alexis Mossa (1844?-1926), he is committed to making known and living the regional heritage. As a historian, he took his father on the paths leading to the chapels of the hinterland of Nice to draw the frescoes; as archaeologists, they defend the creation of a museum of antiques on the hill of Cimiez; as a regionalist linguist and author, he composed many plays in Nissart; by fabulous models of carnival floats, he brings the Nice show to life for decades. Also an ethnologist, he studied local traditions and costumes and resurrected them in the Nice folk dance group La Belle, which he created with Francis Gag in 1955 and whose rehearsals sometimes took place at the Museum of Fine Arts.
This museum, of which he was the curator from 1926 to 1971, had to pay him a heartfelt tribute fifty years after his death. Through the prism of Gustave-Adolphe Mossa's multifaceted "nissardity", the exhibition's journey reveals in a new light this creator with many talents, at the confluence of international artistic movements and regional culture, to which he remains attached all his life.
