MATISSE EXHIBITION - 1930S THROUGH CAHIERS D'ART
23 JUNE - 24 SEPTEMBER 2023
It's the end! Rush in.
This exhibition is co-produced with the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
In Philadelphia, the exhibition is presented from October 19, 2022 to January 29, 2023, and in Paris, from March 1 to May 29, 2023.
In 1930, Matisse left France for a trip to the United States and Tahiti, thus voluntarily marking a turning point or even a break in his work. Dr. Albert C. Barnes' commission for a large mural decoration for his Merion Museum inaugurated in the artist a renewed reflection on decor, synthesis and monumentality. This major achievement is accompanied by new procedures, including the use of colored gouache sheets as well as the use of state photographs that allow him to evolve his composition to the final format. His drawing also bends towards greater concision and stylization even as it becomes the main support and manifestation of a method of improvisation that the artist puts in place during this period. Matisse's production during this decade is thus characterized by a new synthetic and decorative radicalism that brings him closer to Picasso and the Surrealists.
