EXHIBITION "Death is not an end"
23 FEBRUARY - 15 MAY 2022
MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY OF NICE CIMIEZ
The Museum of Archaeology has an important lapidary collection corresponding to the necropolises that surrounded the ancient city of Cemenelum.
A necropolis (from the Greek necros and polis: "City of the Dead") was a funerary space always arranged outside the walls of the city, as required by the Roman law of the "Twelve Tables", for reasons of hygiene but also to separate it from the space of the living. It was located along the access roads, so that the living kept a link with the dead, thus accompanying the traveler entering or leaving the city.
In Cimiez, several funerary complexes surrounding the ancient agglomeration have been identified. They make it possible to consider the limits of it.
In the funerary complex known as the Chosen Rocks (eastern part), were discovered, in the nineteenth century, funerary urns, bones, lamps and tegulae as well as a pot containing a monetary treasure. In the southern part, it was unearthed between 1966 and 1967, during the construction of buildings, Torre di Cimella Avenue, a funerary enclosure comprising a majority of cremation tombs and a mausoleum. Further north, in the 1960s, archaeologists excavated the areas of Avenue du Monastère and the Roman Road. These necropolises have delivered a large number of burial and cremation burials, as well as rich furniture dating from the first to the fourth century AD.
