DIALOGUE OF A PEINTRE WITH THE CINÉMA
For the first time, the Matisse Museum aims to explore the links between Henri Matisse and cinema. An assidulated spectator, Matisse approaches cinema as an entertainment but also thinks of his work according to this new form of popular expression. He does not disdain the observation of his practice as a painter through the "time glass" that is the camera. In François Campaux's film (1946), the latter revealed that the brilliance of her line was nourished by preparation as much as by improvisation and thought. In 1930, Matisse met one of the major filmmakers of silent cinema, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, on a trip to Tahiti that was decisive in his career. Modern cinema, and in particular the French New Wave, elected Henri Matisse as one of its "patrons".
