Placed under the direction of Franz-Olivier Giesbert, the Nice Book Festival receives, each year, more than 200 writers (novelists, essayists, poets, historians, polemicists, politicians, celebrities). It will be inaugurated on June 2nd by Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis, Deputy President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region.
Meetings, signings, readings, shows, animations, discoveries and debates will be on the program of this 27th edition.
What a beautiful and demanding theme, the Festival has chosen this year! In these times when the Ukrainian conflict cruelly reminds us how fragile our freedoms are and how much they should be defended, the President's choice had to be exemplary to bear witness, illustrate it, open it, make it exist.
Giuliano da Empoli is President of the Nice Book Festival 2023.
He is the author of The Mage of the Kremlin (Gallimard), a prophetic novel written a year before the invasion of Ukraine, which details the relentless process, the workings that led to the conflict. Its main character (Vadim Baranov) is the shadow advisor of a Putin whose certainties and isolation lead to tragedy. Heady, disturbing, the Kremlin mage tells of absolute power, his pathetic madness. It was crowned in September 2022 by the Grand Prix de l'Académie Française. Born in 1974, Giuliano da Empoli is Italian-Swiss. Long invested in Italian politics, President of Volta, a think tank based in Milan, he teaches at Sciences-Po Paris. He is the author of a dozen essays and biographies, three of which were published in France, La Peste et l'Orgie (Grasset 2007), Le Florentin (Grasset 2016), Les Ingénieurs du chaos (JC Lattès 2019). A great reader of the Memoirs of Cardinal de Retz (1613-1679), Giuliano da Empoli had two passions: politics and literature. We know that they do not go without Freedoms!
