The "Asia to Yves Saint Laurent" exhibition brings together thirty-five models, inspired by the India, China and Japan, as well as sketches, jewelry, and photographs.
This presentation is an adaptation for the Museum thematic Museum of Asian Arts in Nice, of the first temporary exhibition Yves Saint Laurent Paris, which opened its doors in the fall of 2017 in the former House of couture from the creator.
The outfits of the couturier dialogue with the costumes and traditional jewelry from the collections of the Museum of Asian art.
This confrontation arise tracks to understand the sources of inspiration of the designer and his path to lead to a totally original work.
Thanks to its 'imaginary trips' or 'immobile', Yves Saint Laurent has delivered, over its collections, a vision of distant lands, tinged with knowledge drawn both in reading and in one approach direct objects of art. The couturier has invariably plunged into the heart of local customs, explored the folklore, diverted the clichés in order to offer a representation sublimated clothing traditions. Among its "exoticism", Asia occupies a special place that punctuates his work.
Yves Saint Laurent offers a vision both literal and imagined Asia. Throughout his career, he watched the traditional costumes, Indian, Chinese and Japanese, to give life to creations. From its first collections, he reinterprets the lavish coats of the rulers of the India. Then, Imperial China inspired the collection of autumn-winter 1977, for which it gives a theatrical and transformed the country. That same year, the creator highlights these Asian influences through a new fragrance. The "sulfurous" Opium is a wind of scandal which gives it a worldwide success. Fascinated by the Japan, and especially the kabukitheater, he later revisited the kimono.
