In the heart of Old Nice, close to the Cathedral of St. Reparate, is theChurch of Our Lady of the Annonciation, better known today as the Shrine of St Rita.
Built in the 13th century, it is therefore one of the oldest in Nice, it was first in the Middle Ages a parish church under the title of St. James the Major, then from the 14th century served by clerics of the Order of the Carmes until the Revolution. Closed for a few years, then reopened to worship, it suffered a serious fire in 1834 which destroyed the large painting of the apse, an important work of the painter Domenichino, who represented the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ before the three apostles Peter, John and Jacques-le-majeur. And it is this painting that will be replaced by that of the Annunciation, the work of the Russian painter K.A. Chevelkin, that will offer the Tsar of Imperial Russia Alexander I to his dead camp help in Nice, General Count Alexandre Michaud de Beauretour. Thus the church was then called the "church of the anunciation". And since then, many restoration works have been carried out by the Oblate Fathers of the Virgin Mary.
Simple façade, which contrasts with its baroque decorations and the very large composition of paintings and decorations that can be discovered inside.
Respect this place of worship.
