The chapel of Mercy known as the "Black Penitents", a former St. Gaetan Church, is located on the Saleya Course in Nice.
Built in the 18th century by theTurin architect Bernardo Antonio Vittone, the chapel adapted to a small space is integrated below the convent. It is the "Oculus"- which mark the separation between the chapel and the convent; it can be observed that the lateral oculus are placed in a biased position, thus promoting the penetration of light into the nave. The originality of the volumes with its nave and the elliptical side chapels, the richness of its interior decorations made of a multitude of angels twirling between gilded friezes and false marbles, and the paintings of the Nice painter Bistofli , make the Chapel of Mercy, one of the most beautiful Baroque chapels in Nice.
The interior of the Chapel of Mercy has been classified as a "Historic Monument" since 1921.
It still belongs to the blackpenitents today.
The chapel is accessible to people with disabilities.
Respect this place of worship.
* Oculus are openings in the centre of the domes, in vaults or on elevation walls.
** The brotherhood of the black penitents dates from the 14th century and more specifically 1329, and was composed of prominent Catholics and practitioners who had the time and means to help the poor and the sick, and to assist those sentenced to death. Today, she mainly provides charitable works, and the Catholic funeral service at the Athanée in Nice
