EXHIBITION "CHAGALL, THE VENÇOISE YEARS. A MEDITERRANEAN RENAISSANCE"
JUNE 14 - NOVEMBER 2, 2025
MUSEUM OF VENCE
In 2025, the Marc Chagall National Museum is joining forces with the Musée de Vence - Emile Hugues Foundation to honour the artist by exhibiting his works from the Vence period, produced between 1949 and 1966, the period during which the artist lived in Vence.
Chagall's move to the South of France had a decisive influence on his painting. The light, the vegetation, the rhythm of life all contribute to give him a freer, more sensual style, where the magic of color is more and more present. The Vence period was conducive to technical experimentation: ceramics, sculpture, stained glass, mosaic, tapestry, etc. At that time, the artist multiplied exhibitions and commissions. On the one hand, major projects around the themes of circus, music and dance are emerging, particularly in commissions for public institutions. On the other hand, Chagall continued his work on the Bible, which had begun in 1930 with Ambroise Vollard's commission for the illustrated book Bible. Chagall completed this work of illustration by producing lithographs published in the journal Verve.
In the early 1950s, Chagall worked on a project for monumental works for the Calvary Chapel in Vence. After the project was abandoned, the cycle of the Biblical Message (1956-1966) was the subject of the creation of the first national museum dedicated to a living artist, inaugurated in 1973 in Nice. Work on the Bible continued with numerous commissions for stained glass windows and mosaics, such as the one presented in the cathedral of Vence, inaugurated in 1979.
The exhibition brings together paintings, drawings and original lithographs, sculptures and ceramics from an exceptional loan from the Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice, complemented by works from the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris and private collections.
This exhibition is organized by the National Museums of the
twentieth century of the Alpes-Maritimes in partnership with the city of Vence.
