ARRIVAL OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE 2024 IN NICE
Here are the details of the last two stages of the 2024 edition:
A mountainous route from Nice to the Col de la Couillole has been drawn up for the 20th stage scheduled for Saturday 20 July, while the 21st stage will be contested in a time trial on Sunday 21 July between Monaco and Place Masséna in Nice, over 35 km. A menu conducive to power grabs of all kinds.
JULY 21, 2024: A FINAL TIME TRIAL IN NICE!
Those who pay attention to the details of the history of the Tour de France will point out that the winner of the first edition in 1903, Maurice Garin, although celebrated at the Parc des Princes, inaugurated the race's record by crossing the final finish line in Ville d'Avray. The public was once again gathered at the velodrome to celebrate the heroes of the Grande Boucle in 1904 and 1905, the race itself having also finished a handful of kilometres from the capital. However, the finish of the Tour 2024 scheduled in Nice represents a great first, as the Tour peloton has never finished its route far from Paris. Whatever happens, the riders will feel like they are on familiar ground in the city of Angels, which was already on the Tour programme in 1906, hosted the Grand Départ in 1981 and then in 2020, and has hosted the world's elite at the conclusion of Paris-Nice since 1933. This geographical novelty, conditioned by the logistical imperatives that will already block the Champs-Elysées a few days before the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, is accompanied by a major sporting challenge since the last stage will be judged at the end of an individual time trial. The athletic qualities of the protagonists likely to win suggest that the Tour could remain undecided until the last kilometers, as was the case in 1989, the last time the event offered a time trial at the end of the debates. On that day, by surpassing Laurent Fignon by 58'', the American Greg LeMond took the lead by 8'' at the top of the general classification and won his second Tour with the narrowest margin in history. It is said that records are made to be broken... And the scenario of a battle by seconds takes on more ground in view of the final weekend taken as a whole. The riders will already be present on the roads of the region from Saturday 20 July. Each of them is already aware that the reliefs of the Nice hinterland lend themselves to unbridled high-intensity cavalcades, almost systematically on the final stage of the race to the Sun. There could therefore be opportunities to shake the Yellow Jersey until the end. |
