Shakespeare was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Romantic artists. Verdi made no mistake, who composed several masterpieces from his pieces, including the prodigious Otello and Falstaff.

In 1847, it was Macbeth who fascinated him: the young composer saw in the diabolical Scottish couple the opportunity to break the codes of belcanto. His music will be terrible, dramatic, alternately dazzling and dark – like a painting by Caravaggio! It must be said that the subject is of incredible richness: Macbeth, a Scottish general, lets himself be dragged by his ambitious wife into a series of murders supposed to ensure him the throne. But the dead and his guilt haunt him. Even his wife, the terrible Lady Macbeth, will eventually descend into madness – one of the most beautiful pieces of bravery in all of Romantic opera! But here, Verdi invents a new style, daring to ask his performers for a song in total rupture with the customs inherited from Rossini, Bellini and other Donizetti. He wants the rage to be heard, the darkness of the soul of the protagonists to be embodied in their song and in their voice. With Macbeth, Verdi was already inventing all modernity.
