The exhibition Noël Dolla, atelier visit at the Matisse Museum in Nice brings together thirteen works from the latest sniper series, made between 2020 and 2021 at the atelier du 109 in Nice.

In 2018, Noël Dolla initiated the Sniper series. This generic title refers to a set of works in which the artist blows his painting with the help of an air gun thus producing seductive, and equally frightening, "Flowers of Evil". Pretty at first, terrifying when you know what it's all about: war, death, shredded flesh... As with previous series, the tool for trivial use – here a "weapon to unclog the ADWC45 puppies" – plays the role of intercessor between his body and the painting, always to put it at a distance, not to be in the face to face with the painting and the projection of any affect whatsoever. Because since the Years Support/Surface, Dolla has stubbornly cultivated the "spirit of abstraction", so that painting continues to live, to carry the subject, far from academicism. Most of the series of the one who sees himself as a "baroque rationalist", refer to the political and social context: Dolla is a committed artist. When a new subject arises, terribly human, he will have to appropriate it, swallow the anger or hatred it arouses, in order to sublimate it in the very exercise of painting. Hence the importance for him of the painter's tools, often diverted from their use, but always significant.
