Nice - La Ville de Nice fait vivre le Carnaval

La Ville de Nice fait vivre le Carnaval
du 16 February au 07 March -

In 2021, the City of Nice brings Carnival to life in the heart of Nice!

A must-see event in the City of Nice and the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis, the Nice Carnival is the1st Carnival in France and one of the most famous in the world with the Carnivals of Rio and Venice. It attracts 200,000 visitors each year, 18% of whom are foreign tourists, resulting in nearly 30 million euros in economic benefits to the territory.

In view of the current health crisis and the attendance that such an event generates, the Nice Carnival "King of Animals", originally scheduled from 13 to 27 February 2021, is postponed to 2022.

Despite this postponement, the City of Nice is committed to supporting the activity of carnival-goers, whose craftsmanship is part of the city's intangible cultural heritage. This know-how will be presented and enhanced throughout 2021, through the Nice and metropolitan event programming.

On the program:

  • February 16: Acarnival structure will be installed in Place Masséna.
  • Weekend of February 20: Masséna Square will be flowered with mimosas to honor the famous Battles of Flowers (1 ton of mimosas ordered).
  • February 26th in the evening: Moya's cyber carnival will be re-opened. It brings together Internet users from five continents connected from their computers via their avatars. All participate in a virtual parade on a 3D reproduction of Masséna Square, in the artist's universe on Second Life.
  • Evening February 27: Incineration of the carnival structure

February 20 to March 7 (winter holidays):

  • A communication campaign on the theme "Carnival in the heart of Nice" will give an appointment to the Carnival of 2022
  • An exhibition along the Promenade des Anglais will highlight the know-how of carnival-goers, retrace the history and traditions of the Nice Carnival
  • The people of Nice will be involved through social networks with challenges to invite them to take pictures in disguise to bring the spirit of Carnival to life.
  • Several leisure centres and AnimaNice will be at the party: during the February school holidays, workshops to make small floats, "big heads", costumes and disguises as well as cooking (ganses).
  • The Nice cooking workshop will start at Carnival time by offering online iconic recipes of this festival.
  • Alain Amiel's short film "The Carnival of Martine Doytier" will be shown on cultivez-vous.nice.fr and social networks (23 min - production Les Amies de Martine Doytier): The film tells the story of the Nice Carnival by exploring the spectacular painting "Carnival 1981" painted by this artist of the art scene of Nice and whose major works belong to the collections of the City of Nice thanks to the donation Jean Ferrero. To the sound of music created especially by Martine Doytier's son, the Nice musician Brice Delacquis Doytier, the history of Carnival is told by Annie Sidro, its great historian. Martine Doytier is also present thanks to television archival images and explains with verve the adventure that was the creation of this poster. This documentary film was born from a collaboration between Marc Sanchez, President of the association "Friends of Martine Doytier" and Alain Amiel, Writer, Art Critic. It is the preamble to a future major exhibition of objects and drawings never before presented to the general public.
