Claudine Grammont, director of the Matisse Museum, proposes for the autumn2020 a new exhibition that will evoke the posterity of the artist in the second half of the twentieth century, including the abstract reading of his work. The famous critic Clement Greenberg noted in 1973 that American abstraction owed much of its peculiarity to the influence of Henri Matisse. Initiated by Abstract Expressionism, and then by the second generation of the Post-Painterly Abstraction, this American reception has acquired from Matisse a renewed conception of pictorial space that asserts itself as a pure continuum without limit: an exit from the frame. Matisse's touch, his way of laying color with a keen sense of the surface and the awareness of his breathing, was another essential contribution. It is through the spectrum of this first American reading that Matisse's art can then inspire the French artists of the 1960s generation.After the great exhibition Matisse Metamorphoses devoted to his sculpted work during the spring and summer of 2020, and the extraordinary encounter with cinema revealed by Cinematisse in 2019, the Matisse Museum continues with "Lesmurs recoil" a program that seeks to reveal Matisse in a different way. The title of this new journey, "Walls Recede," is inspired by a quote from the artist to his son-in-law art critic Georges Duthuit about Fauvism1. He says well what was one of the main contributions of Matisse's art to future generations. Nineteen American and European artists will be presented in dialogue with a selection of works from the museum's collection:Jean Arp, Joseph Albers, Morris Louis, Ellsworth Kelly, Shirley Jaffe, Al Held, Frank Stella, Richard Serra, Aurélie Nemours, Simon Hantaï, Raymond Hains, Jacques Villeglé, Claude Viallat, Daniel Buren,Pierre Buraglio, Bernar Venet, Louis Cane, No. Imagined during the period of confinement, this exceptional clash was made possible thanks to the generosity of MAMAC, the Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation, the Concrete Art Space and with the help of the artists themselves. A fine example of cultural solidarity.
