This guided tour will also take place on October 15 at 2pm and november 18 at 2pm!

The city centre of Nice (marble cross district, Golden Square) has the distinction of housing a large number of religious buildings of different cults on a geographical perimeter yet very small. Why such a profusion of different churches?

These multiple places of worship are in fact a testimony to the different foreign communities who have stayed in Nice from the Belle Epoque and the development of tourism first winter and then summer and seaside.

Thus, we will see during our walk an Anglican church in neo-Gothic style, built in 1862 because of the growing importance of the British community that has settled in Nice since the middle of the 18th century. The British community was thus the first foreign community in Nice chronologically and in terms of importance.

The Russian community soon joined the British community, notably from 1864, when Nice was connected to the railway network, making it easier to travel from Russia. The Church of St. Nicholas and St. Alexandra was born (1859), as the first Russian Orthodox church in Nice (before St. Nicholas Cathedral built at the beginning of the 20th century), and especially as the first Russian church built outside Russia!

We will also visit during our walk traces of the American community of Nice, present as early as the 19th century in the city but much smaller than the British community (the American community will become more important during the interwar period and the Roaring Twenties in particular). An Episcopal church (now a Reformed Protestant temple of the Holy Spirit) was built accordingly in 1886. A Lutheran church was also established in 1866 to welcome the German-speaking community of Nice...

In addition, we will have the chance during this visit to meet with various stakeholders who will allow us to enter these often difficult-to-reach buildings and we will shed light on their history!

The interventions that will be offered to you in some churches are volunteers, so it will be advisable to make a small thank you donation in return. Thank you for your understanding!

With "Secrets of Neighbourhoods" discover the "past" of a neighbourhood, its exciting history, and its "present" and meet the actors who participate in the life and attractiveness of the neighborhood today: artisans, traders, artists, gallery owners, restaurateurs... Good addresses and friendliness are at the rendezvous!

Attention! The meeting point is in front of the Russian Orthodox Church of St Nicholas and St Alexandra at 6 Longchamps Street, not in front of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral on Tsarevich Boulevard!
