LES GIACOMETTI

A family of artists!
June 27 -22 November 2020

In 2020, the Maeght Foundation will present two exceptional exhibitions, entrusted to guest curators, around artists from its collection. From the summer, from June 27 to November 22, 2020, the Maeght Foundation will offer a unique event in France with the exhibition "Les Giacometti" which will highlight the famous family of artists from the Swiss village of Stampa. Around Alberto Giacometti, best known for his emblematic filiform sculptures, the public will be able to discover the work of his father Giovanni and his cousin Augusto, both painters, but also his two brothers, Diego his youngest, sculptor and designer, and Bruno the youngest, architect. This exhibition will offer an original panorama of this artistic dynasty.

Guest curator: Peter Knapp, multidisciplinary artist (photographer, graphic designer, painter, filmmaker and videographer), artistic director of the collection of works entitled "Contemporary" published by the Centre Georges Pompidou, and co-author of three books on Alberto Giacometti including "the five Giacometti"."

From June 27 to November 22, 2020, the exhibition "Les Giacometti" celebrates a family of artists. Its curator Peter Knapp proposes to discover the talent and originality of the Giacometti: Alberto, world famous, his father Giovanni, his cousin Augusto, and his two brothers Diego and Bruno. Whether they are painters, sculptors or architects, they have marked the art of the20th century.

Gathered for the first time in France, the Giacometti set up five artists with different but intertwined backgrounds. This original exhibition allows you to discover which cultural family Alberto Giacometti, the most famous among the general public, comes from. It testifies to the place of this family in art as the bonds that these five members forged between them. The exhibition also evokes their intimate relationship to their home village, Stampa, in the canton of Grisons in Switzerland, which has become an unmissable place in the history of modern art.

Around thirty major sculptures and drawings belonging to its collection, complemented by a collection of paintings, films, archival photographs and objects, the Maeght Foundation highlights the extraordinary and unique history of these five artists from the same family: Giovanni Giacometti, painter (1868-1933), his three sons, Alberto Giacometti, painter, draughtsman and sculptor (1901-1966); Diego Giacometti, sculptor and designer (1902-1985), Bruno Giacometti, architect (1907-2012) and finally their cousin Augusto Giacometti, painter (1877-1947).
