"Raoul Dufy, Paint Happiness"

Born in Le Havre, Raoul Dufy was first influenced by the Norman light of Eugene Boudin and Claude Monet. He trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and befriended Marquet, Friez, Matisse, Braque and the poet Apollinaire. He briefly participated in the Fauvism movement and kept a joy in the colours and their warmth. Gradually, he goes towards a more personal creation made of a search for light touching colored flats, on which are superimposed drawings with bright, light, removed and always elegant features. An excellent draughtsman, he goes to the essentials of the subject and the form, both in his paintings as well as in his graphic creations or his fabric models.

His gaze is set on motifs that reflect the joie de vivre and the sunny beauty of the world that opens before him. The search for the rendering of light is the constant of its creation, until it manages to render the maximum light by a black sun.
