In the Renaissance, the discovery of the Americas by Christophe Colomb (1451/1506) will change the course of history forever. Explorations of the Genoese Navigator travel, very quickly relayed by others, will mark the starting point of a conquest comprehensive and systematic of our planet on behalf of the West, which will find a Fermata at the threshold of the twentieth century, with the discovery Far North through the Northwest passage. For more than four centuries, lands and other continents will then emerge as the collective memory as the Australia, Antarctica, South America, not to mention the myriad of islands in the Pacific, etc.
Since the Renaissance, paintings are almost supernatural encounters with other peoples, other civilizations. A new vision of the world arises suddenly a sclerotic middle ages where the limits of the universe seemed now abuses. In the field of Visual arts, whole new iconography then made its appearance around these major browsers making history. Artists sting then revive in 'image' the story of the landings with their explorers, their conquistadors, when they are not describing manners and customs of the Aboriginal people or just these landscapes.
Maritime tragedies, lives of sailors, or censuses of faunas and floras, artists will know over time, accountable for all facets of these explorations from the four corners of the globe. Representations of tropical forests to the icy landscapes of the Arctic, this conference combining engravings, drawings and paintings will seek to highlight how the voyages of exploration have hit the artistic imagination over the centuries.
