The forbidden city at Monaco. Life of Court of the emperors and empresses of China", which the Commissioner was entrusted jointly to Mr. Jean-Paul DESROCHES, Honorary general curator of heritage and Mr. WANG Yuegong, Director of the Arts Department of the Palace in the Palace Museum Imperial, will bring together a selection of some 250 exceptional pieces, from the former Palace of the rulers of the Chinese, as well as loans from large collections to European and American (Museum Cernuschi, Museum Louvre, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Royal Museums of Art and history in Brussels, Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington). It is at the heart of an emblematic place, anchored in memory, collective and rich of a priceless heritage, the public will be invited to enter.

The forbidden city is one of the most prestigious Palace sets and the most visited site in the world with some 10 million admissions a year. Both Palace and Museum is around him as the new capital of Beijing is ordered. The forbidden city has arisen ex nihilo of the will of the 3rd of the emperors of the Ming and was built with a single jet between 1406 and 1420. It will become the cradle of power which will follow the Manchu emperors on nearly three centuries.

The personality of the Qing emperors is at the center of this project and more particularly the rulers of Kangxi (1662-1722), Yongzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong (1736-1795), who intend to be paragons of Chinese culture. As a representative of heaven on Earth, the Emperor, said the "son of heaven", is an omnipotent being, both military leader, religious leader and head of the letters. The public will discover insignia stories related to these different functions: portraits, costumes of pageantry, furniture, valuables, scientific instruments,... of which some are among the 'national treasures '. In the tradition of the Manchu people, whose powerful "Eight banners" army will take control of China from 1644, the military conquests of the Qing emperors will also be represented through various objects and engravings illustrating their victorious campaigns.

Under the reign of the Qing, the beautiful share culture. Illustrating the official taste to one of the periods of peak in the history of Chinese civilization, the various forms of expression of Chinese art, which influence at that time well known West, will be highlighted: the arts of the brush, to through calligraphy and painting, the world of decorative arts, with a porcelain cabinet and a cabinet of lacquers, music and Opera. Excellence and refinement of this art have left a legacy that is still very present today as him will demonstrate the impressive landscape screen of Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), one of the most legendary Chinese painters of the twentieth century.

Designed as a tour through the rooms of the Palace to the gardens of the forbidden city, the course travels through emblematic places of the city-Palace (temple of heaven, the throne room, Buddhist temple, temple of the ancestors, tea pavilion) plunging the public in a journey to the heart of the story of a multimillenary civilization.

The exhibition will broach this subject of heritage in a modern way and didactic thanks, notably, to the presence of two models of temples monumental (China Red Sandalwood Museum, Beijing), unpublished audiovisual archives and a immersive tour at the heart of the Palace of the forbidden city.
