The Citadel of Saint-Elme de Villefranche-sur-Mer
To protect the County of Nice from invaders, the Duke of Savoy built in the 16th century the Citadel, the strong satellites of Mont-Alban and Saint-Hospice and the port of Darse where the galleys are stationed. These constructions, entrusted to Italian engineers, foreshadow a new type of bastioned fortifications.
Today, this remarkable complex (3ha) houses the Town Hall and the Volti Goetz-Boumeester Museums, the Roux Collection and a convention centre.
