The St. Peter's Fishermen's Chapel says "Chapelle Cocteau"
This is a very romantic little fishermen's chapel on the port of Villefranche-sur-Mer which was fully decorated in 1956 by Jean Cocteau.
It is the story of an old Romanesque chapel abandoned, or almost, that fell asleep on the quays of the village of Villefrnache-sur-Mer, only used by fishermen to put their nets back.
And Jean Cocteau passed by! or rather stopped there.
In 1957, after negotiation with the fishermen, Cocteau puts his brushes and inspiration in this humble Chapel of St. Peter, and will take three years to cover it with monumental frescoes, projecting his drawings on the walls, one day adding a rooster, another, a face... There are religious themes evoking the apostle, as well as more popular themes such as the tribute to the gypsies of the Holy Marys of the Sea.
