It was inaugurated about ten years after the death of the artist who fell in love with Nice!
THE MATISSE MUSEUM has the largest collection of his works: paintings and gouaches, engravings, drawings, and almost all sculptures.
Located in the Villa des Arènes, superb Genoese residence of the seventeenth century, it adjoins the bullring, and a park consisting of hundreds of olive trees and vast lawns, it is a place for family walks.
The Museum's permanent collection is interesting because it presents Matisse's artistic evolution, his advances and research in the field of color and graphic design, from the first paintings of 1890 to the cut gouaches of the end of his life. It includes many paintings and cut gouaches, drawings, engravings, and almost all the scultures; you can also discover some illustrated books and photographs, as well as objects that belonged to the painter; silkscreen prints, tapestries, ceramics, stained glass windows and documents complete what constitutes the artist's most important collection.
Each year, temporary exhibitions allow us to go a little further in the knowledge of this immense artist, and bring new insights by treating a part of his life or his works.
