The monument to the dead of the Great War 1914-1918 is located in Nice, on the seafront, under the hill of the Chateau, at the rauba-Capeù wharf which accesses the Old Port.
You will be impressed by its size, it is one of the largest in France.
A giant urn is placed in a kind of alcove, and contains the 3,665 plates of the Niçois who died for France during the First World War.
There are two high reliefs sculpted by Alfred Janniot ("generation of the artists of fire", himself returning from thiswar): the one on the left is based on the theme of war and the one on the right on the theme of peace. On the central inscription that separates them, one can read:
"The City of Nice to its dead sons for France: Remember the works your fathers have done of their time and you will receive immortal glory and name."
