* The Society of the Holy Sepulchre of Nice was founded in February 1431 by ten characters from large families of the county and gathered around Jean Grimaldi de Beuil.
This chivalrous society had two goals:
- Prepare and finance the installation of a Franciscan convent of the Observance in Nice.
- Support the work of the custody of the Holy Land for which the Franciscans were in charge (hence the name of this society which refers to the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem).
** The Brotherhoods of Penitents.
These associations of lay people appeared in Nice in the 14th century, according to a form born in Italy in the 13th century.
The four fraternities still alive in Nice were founded:
1306 The White Penitents of the Holy Cross
1329 In 1329 The Black Penitents of Mercy
1431 The Blue Penitents of the Holy Sepulchre
and between 1576 and 1620 The Red Penitents of the Holy Trinity and the Holy Shroud
Each fraternity has a social mission: to help the sick for the whites, to the dying and to the piety for the blacks, to orphans for the blues, to orphans for the reds it has sometimes kept, at least for the first two. They have their chapel, often artistic masterpieces, and their different coloured outfits that identify them. Today, in addition to their mission, they participate in the great religious festivals of the city of Nice.
