The People of Nice calls it "Holy Reparate" after the original chapel that dates back to the 11th century, but its official name is "Saint Mary Holy Reparate", recalling the name of the ancient cathedral "Saint Mary of the Castle" which was on the Castle Hill.
Raised to the rank of parish in 1246, it became a cathedral in 1531 after several extensions and improvements. And it was between 1649 and 1679 that thearchitect Jean André Guibert gave it the look it has today.
The bell tower was built a little later, in the 17th century, between 1731 and 1757; and the Baroque façade in the 19th century around 1825-1830.
The Latin cross building is inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
The interior decoration of Genoese influence is sumptuous, confers the choir topped with a dome with glazed tiles, and the interior chapels that have been decorated by the rich Nice families and various corporations.
The Cathedral of St. Reparate, a symbol of the Baroque in Nice, has been classified as a "historic monument" since 1906.
