You are at the Museum of Archaeology in Nice, on the site of Cimiez, dedicated to antiquity and the Paleo-Christian era.
It was the site of the ancient city of Cemenelum, capital of the province of the Maritime Alps, after the end of the conquest of the Alps by Augustus and the organization of the Ligurian territory.
Mostly from the 3rd century, these remains actually contain different periods of construction from the 1st to the 7th century.
There is an amphitheatre, the remains of a paleo-Christian church and baptistery, three complete thermal complexes, streets, a sewer system, a schola, a domus, shops.
It is a very interesting site because it makes it possible to become aware of the advanced techniques of the time. For example, the thermal complex provides an idea of how the Romans used the baths and the importance of this practice in society; the technical aspects of these buildings, including the heating system, can be seen on the bath site, and you can find the model in the museum. They were composed of a cold room, a frigidarium having retained an elevation of more than 10 meters; this cold room, which had a basin, was in communication with the heated rooms, the tepidarium (warm room), the sudatorium (stuve) and the two caldaria (hot rooms).
The museum of the site is in the Villa des Arenas, which also houses the Matisse Museum.
The collections presented concern the life of Cemenelum and the province of the Maritime Alps, through the numerous objects and official or private documents discovered during archaeological excavations at the site, but also objects found in for example those discovered in the wreck of the Antgue C off Gulf-juan.
