The Château Musée Grimaldi is now the setting of the ethnographic museum of the olive tree, the museum of modern Mediterranean art, the Solidor donation (paintings by Picabia, Foujita, Van Dongen, Dufy, Lempicka, Kisling...) and contemporary art exhibitions. Finally, the tower offers a magnificent panorama of the medieval village, the Bay of Angels and the Mercantour.
A bit of history
At the beginning of the 14th century, the Count of Provence granted the lordship of Cagnes to Rainier Grimaldi,in gratitude for the military services he rendered to him. Rainier Grimaldi built a castle at the top of the hill of Haut-de-Cagnes to defend this land, but also to assert his lordship power. Around 1620, Jean-Henri Grimaldi transformed the building into a stately home combining the charm and richness of a palace: monumental staircase, two-level arcaded patio, reception room and oratory show a strong influence of the Italian Baroque. The ceiling of the large hall is painted in trompe l'oeil by the Genoese Giulio Benso, with a spectacular Phaeton Falls in the centre.
