The national museums of the XX^e century of Alpes-Maritimes regularly inviting contemporary artists to exhibit or create works in exhibitions designed resonates with collections and sites of the three museums.

In 2018, the Fernand Léger national museum wished to highlight rich thematic and matches plastic between the painting of Fernand light (1881-1955), pioneer of the avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century, and the work photographic Stéphane Couturier, a french artist born in 1957.

Stéphane Couturier encounter with the work of the painter gave rise to the creation of new photographs, inspired by the Museum's collection: Stéphane Couturier chose the table titled The great tug, industrial landscape of the edges of Seine painted by Fernand Leger in 1923, starting point for the photographer of new shots, made in the town of Sète in the fall of 2017.

This exposure also older works of Stéphane Couturier, who establish a dialogue in situ with the tables of Fernand Léger. The two artists share a same fascination with the profound changes in the city, a common interest in the world of work, industrial design or modern architecture, including that of Le Corbusier. But, while Fernand Léger, after the second world war, expresses his faith in progress, modernity and the reconstruction, Stéphane Couturier documents from the early 1990s, the gradual disappearance of the industrial society and the transformation urban space, resulting in global cities (Paris, Berlin, Seoul, Brasilia, El Salvador da Bahia, Algiers).

In his new series, designed in response to the work of light, Stéphane Couturier uses the superposition of several digital photographs, initiated in 2004 in his first series titled Melting Pointtechnique. The artist brings a hybrid reality, from the fusion of two or three images. This synthesis between two realities produces a multitude of details, where the eye of the beholder is lost and provokes a sense of movement and dissolution of the subject within a monumental composition.

Today, the photographic work of Stéphane Couturier, playing the endless potential of the digital tool, combines a documentary approach to a complex treatment of the composition. Like a Cubist painting, she draws from the real, him fragments and, thanks to the rhythm and the contrasts between lines, shapes and colorful, plans exceed to offer a new perception.

Stéphane Couturier questions so the allegedly objective nature of the medium of photography: shooting becomes a material. This material develops a machine to build a combination of forms which refreshes permanently registered real.
