Conference Bohemian fantasy painting (Turner, Corot, Courbet, Manet, Van Gogh, Matisse...)
By Joel Scholtès
Lecturer associated with the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis
Sung, filmed, versified, exalted, hundred times declared dead and always reborn, "Bohemia" is part of the modern myths. The conference sheds light on a part of our culture too often obscured. It highlights the transformation of the status of the artist in the mid-19th century as well as the fundamental contribution of nomadic peoples in the construction of European identity.
It's also of course to show how, since the sixteenth century, artists remain fascinated by this tribe mysterious origins. Whether it's their way of life, their appearance, their costume or their culture, Bohemians feed fantasies of artists, even if it means creating stereotyped images, far from a reality often weaker.
