Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the metropolis Nice Côte d'Azur, President delegate of the Provence Region:

"70 years ago to the day, the 1St festival of Jazz in the world was in Nice...". That year, the notes echoed around the edges of the great blue. At any point of the globe not yet were reunited as many jazz musicians. And what jazz musicians! Louis Armstrong,Rex Stewart, Milton Mezzrow, Derek Deville, Claude Luter, Lucky Thomson all thrilled the walls of the Opera of frenzied rhythms. 70 years later, the Nice Jazz Festival has nothing lost his soul. Between tradition and modernity, he returns each year with adults. »

History

In 1948, Louis Armstrong is the undisputed star of this first festival of Jazz. The artists of the Opera and the municipal Casino on place Masséna, where they dance to the sound of the best orchestras in the world under the large canopy Belle Epoque. Jazz man of the first hour, Boris Vian attend each concert and comments for the magazine "Hot Jazz". A sumptuous "night of Nice" at the Negresco closing this memorable event. Stéphane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, but also Yves Montand and Suzy Delair participate in this final touted as "the biggest gala of all time".

In 70 years, Nice has been the land of great jazzmen among missing legends (Aimé Barelli, Barney Willen, Bob Rover...), international stars (Richard Galliano, André Ceccarelli, Didier Lockwood...), and news generations (Pierre Bertrand, Vincent Peirani, Camille Bertault...). The theater of greenery and garden Albert 1er have witnessed the passage of these giants of Jazz, including Herbie Hancock, that happened many times and was the patron of the 2017 edition.

From 1974, the Nice Jazz festival has invested the garden of the arenas of Cimiez, in the presence of dozens of orchestras and hundreds of musicians, among the olive trees and the Roman ruins. As early as 1994, the Nice Jazz festival, called the Grand Parade, becomes the Nice Jazz Festival. He hustles traditions by opening up diverse musical currents. The event is organized by private productions which follow including Michel Leeb in artistic control...

From 2011, under the leadership of Christian Estrosi, Nice is the first city in France to return to in-house and to produce a festival of this size. The Nice Jazz Festival takes a new boom taking place in the heart of town and putting the jazz and music cousins at the heart of its programming.

70 years later, the Nice Jazz Festival is always also mythical... From 17 to 21 July 2018, 30 groups, including the iconic Massive Attack, occur during 5 consecutive nights, at the rate of 6 trays by night on 2 stages simultaneously. More than 45.000 people are expected on this major event of the summer.
