Exhibition "1917: Nice American", programmed as part of the commemoration of the first world war by the Service Archives Nice Côte d'Azur to the "Marble Palace" of the 1St March to September 28, 2017, has received the National Label of the Missio n of the centenary of the first world war and the Label of the American (WWICC) Centennial Commission, by a commission chaired by the historian Antoine Prost. Recognition highlights the exemplary character of the commemorations of the centenary of the first world war brought by the city of Nice, which are not confined to the year 2014, but accompany the time of the war, until the commemoration of the centennial of the armistice, in November 2018.
The year 2017 marks the centenary of the entry into the war of the United States of America, alongside of the France and its allies. After the vote by Congress of the declaration of war on the Germany on 6 April 1917, it is only natural that the city of Nice renamed its famous Wharf of Midi "platform of the United States. She welcomes many soldiers Americans on leave in 1918-1919, along with a certain Harry Truman, future president of the United States. With the return of peace, the Americans come back on the Côte d'Azur, winter and summer, bringing with them jazz, American bars, some form of opulence and joie de vivre. Their investments are helping to rejuvenate the tourist offer of the city, with, for example, the magnificent Palace of the Mediterranean of the billionaire Frank Jay Gould, on the Promenade of the English.
Under the title " 1917: Nice American ', the exhibition shows the impact of the American presence in Nice, 1787 (travel of Jefferson) on the eve of the second world war, on tourism, recreation, the arts and charities. It is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue. She associates the Archives Service Nice Côte d'Azur (exhibition, conference, educational workshops, jazzy musical entertainment), the Service of the historic heritage (urban course 'Swing and Red Cross' in the footsteps of Americans in Nice) and the Cinémathèque of Nice (cycle of American films).
